Vintage 1997 Mambo "The Mystery of the Egg" Tee
A glowing egg, a crowned stranger, and a very Mambo kind of riddle
This is a vintage Mambo Graphics tee from 1997, the year printed in the copyright line beside the logo on the front: © Mambo Graphics P/L '97. The back carries a bold, almost devotional piece of art titled "The Mystery of the Egg"
The Back Graphic:
A crowned, wide-eyed figure presses a glowing egg against a burst of radiating light, framed in deep red, orange and blue. Above it, a curved red banner reads MAMBO, and below it the title runs across a matching red scroll: THE MYSTERY OF THE EGG. The hand-drawn, woodcut-style linework and saturated colours are classic Mambo from the era when its art leaned into surreal humour and street-poster energy.
The Front:
The classic Mambo eye scroll sits on the chest: a watchful blue eye under a cream banner reading MAMBO, finished with the 1997 Mambo Graphics copyright.
About Mambo:
Mambo started in Sydney in 1984, founded by Dare Jennings and Andrew Rich as an after-hours project in a screen-printing studio. Its loud, irreverent graphics, drawn by an ever-changing roster of artists, turned it into one of Australia's most recognisable surf and streetwear labels, and its 90s tees are now sought-after pieces of Aussie counter-culture.
